Skinny jeans are a type of jeans that are, like their name suggests, skinnier than a typical pair of straight leg jeans. Whereas straight legs are exactly the same width from top to bottom, skinny jeans actually begin narrowing at the thighs and hips, to follow the natural contours of the legs. This obviously makes skinny jeans a lot tighter and more revealing than most jeans (and most pants, for that matter) that guys are typically used to wearing.
Skinny jeans were restricted to women and gay men for the longest time, but became popular among European hipsters and have gradually spread to North America as well. The growing trend in men’s clothing is for tighter fitting clothes, in reaction to the baggy gangster fashion of the ’90s, so skinny jeans are a natural fit.
Obviously, you will only want to attempt to wear skinny jeans if you have a nice physique. Even among skinny jeans, some jeans are skinnier than others, so if you are looking for a pair for that hipster look, try starting with only slightly tighter jeans before going for the full on hip huggers.
Skinny jeans are also referred to as “slim fit jeans“.
