    Hair dryer

The biggest secrets to a perfect-looking blow dry is that doesn’t require a lot of time and you don’t need a professional blow drier.

The first key is a good cut, which at the moment is short or shaved and thick and longer on top. The second trick is a small amount of the right product.

But let’s start at the very beginning:

    1. Use a moisturizing shampoo. Blow drying can rob your hair of shine and you want to retain your hair’s luster with a non-drying shampoo.

    2. After you wash your hair, towel dry it. Your hair should be damp, not wet when you blow dry.

    3. After you’ve towel dried, apply product if you need/want it. A few tips: If you have curly/wavy hair that you’re blowing straight, use a straightening serum. If your hair tends to frizz, use a little bit of a styling cream. If you need volume, use root-lift mousse. Another piece of advice: err on the side of too little product, than too much, otherwise the creams and mousses will weigh your hair down and make it look greasy.

    4. After applying product, look down at the floor and dry your roots at the nape of your neck and, using your fingers only, pull hair away from your head and position the dryer so it’s drying from the top of your head downward. Use a higher heat setting for this step.

    5. After you’ve “rough dried” your hair from the underside, get right side up, and put the dryer on a low setting and run a brush through as you dry to smooth your hair. Make sure you part your hair where you want it at this stage and also blow dry bangs first or they get harder to deal with as they dry. Another tip: use a brush with natural bristles. Rounded, rubber or wood bristles also work well depending on how thick your hair is and the look you want. A paddle brush with rubber bristles is good for smoothing. If you’re going for volume, try a round brush.

    6. If you want to further control/sleekify your hair, this is the time to apply pomade or a styling wax. These two products adhere easier to dry hair, letting you control the style.

    A few more takeaways:

-If you want a more “undone” look, forgo the brush or comb and use your fingers to pull your hair in the direction of the look you want.

-Direct the hair dryer’s air down your hair shaft, starting at the top. Doing it any other way results in frizz.

-Start at one section and go to the next.

-When each section is completely dry, use your dryer’s “cool shot” feature to finish and smooth it.

-If you want to dry your hair straight, a nozzle attachment on your blow dryer (most come with them) is key because it directs the air.

-If you don’t have a lot of hair, go for a razor-short haircut or a completely bald head.
