The law of inertia states that an object has a tendency to either remain motionless or maintain a specific direction and velocity when there is no external force acting upon it. And we humans are no different. We’re creatures of habit and in the absence of some kind of force towards change, we tend to become victims of inertia.
Say for instance, you’ve grown into the habit of drinking whenever you go out to a club or bar, you’re more likely to keep doing this than change this behavioral pattern. So if you want to cut down on your drinking and instead focus on your pickup skills, you will have to make a conscious effort to overcome your inertia.
Sometimes the hardest part of overcoming inertia is making the initial effort. Just like pushing a vehicle becomes easier once it starts rolling forward, tackling inertia becomes much easier once we’re able to make the initial effort to change our state. And once that initial effort is made, it’s a matter of maintaining momentum and being mindful of not regressing into old behavior patterns. But in some instances making that initial effort can be an incredibly difficult task. This is because people have a tendency to resist change even when it presents favorable outcomes.
One of the most effective ways to take action to overcome inertia is to jolt or shock yourself. This can be done either by drilling the harmful consequences of your current behavior patterns into your mind or by throwing yourself headfirst into a challenge. For example, a pickup artist who is finding it hard to overcome his inertia to go out and work on his social skills can ask himself if he’s willing to face a life of loneliness and despair. Or he could go out by himself alone or sign up for social activities where he would be forced to improve on his social skills to get by.
Once the initial effort is made, it is important to aid your progress by setting yourself small, achievable goals and rewarding yourself for reaching them. If you set yourself goals that are too far beyond your capabilities, you are likely to lose motivation and regress into your old behavior patterns. For example, a pickup artist could set himself a goal of approaching five sets one day, and ten sets the next. And by rewarding yourself for reaching these milestones you keep yourself motivated and gather momentum that’ll help you make long lasting change.
