Check Pattern “Check” is the name given to patterns which are made up of a combination of horizontal and vertical lines of different colors.

The check pattern is commonly associated with Celtic countries such as Scotland, where woven dyed wool with a check pattern was a staple item of clothing for many centuries.

The check pattern is not unique to Celtic countries, of course, and the check motif has been incorporated by many different cultures and is in widespread use today.

See the entries on Plaid and Tartan for more information on the Check Pattern.
