Bullshit Escalation is a term used by some PUAs to describe the positive effect that a piece of advice or information can have, even if it isn’t true. The concept is similar to the placebo effect encountered in medicine, where a patient is given a bogus treatment but still sees noticeable benefits. Sometimes just because a person believes something is true, it becomes true because of that belief.
Bullshit Escalation is especially true in pickup, since one of the most important traits when it comes to picking up women is confidence. Confidence is just a belief in oneself and a belief that one will succeed. So merely believing in a pickup method or a pickup routine can increase a PUA’s confidence. And that confidence will increase his success with women, even if the thing that he believes in is bullshit.
For example, a GPUA might be given a silly opener such as “I like salad,” and given a bullshit explanation as to why the line always works in getting women to be attracted to them. Even if the reasons why the opener work are made up, if the person using the opener believes strongly enough that the opener will work, this will come across in his subcommunication and lead to the opener being successful. This highlights the importance of delivery when opening, and communicating in general. It is not what a PUA says, but how he says it that will determine whether or not he succeeds.
There is a lot of bullshit in the PUA community, with many PUA gurus attempting to give legitimacy to their methods by explaining them in terms of evolutionary psychology, NLP, spirituality, and other disciplines that have only a tenuous link to hard science. However, even if the reasoning behind a technique is false, the technique itself can still work. Sometimes it is just the belief that the technique will work, that makes it work. The most important thing to focus on is what works in the field and how to execute it, rather than speculating about why it works.
